چکیده

In Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA, we have seen changes in the number of brown bears and sea otters. The animals a species habitat can support is called carrying capacity. Even though live on land otters ocean, these two mammals share coastal habitats. Bears eat salmon, other fish, plants, clams, beached whales. Sea feed clams marine invertebrates. All foods are influenced by ocean. Recently, fewer but more otters! What changed? Many things, several observations point to There whales, so rely plants for food. Fewer mean must work harder find Our studies helping us understand how why capacity given may change over time.

Increased Land Use by Chukchi Sea Polar Bears in Relation to Changing Sea Ice Conditions.

Recent observations suggest that polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are increasingly using land habitats in some parts of their range, where they have minimal access to their preferred prey, likely in response to loss of their sea ice habitat associated with climatic warming. We used location data from female polar bears fit with satellite radio collars to compare land use patterns in the Chukchi Se...

Sea otters, kelp forests, and the extinction of Steller's sea cow.

The late Pleistocene extinction of so many large-bodied vertebrates has been variously attributed to two general causes: rapid climate change and the effects of humans as they spread from the Old World to previously uninhabited continents and islands. Many large-bodied vertebrates, especially large apex predators, maintain their associated ecosystems through top-down forcing processes, especial...

Sea otters are recolonizing southern California in fits and starts

After near extinction as a result of the fur trade in the 1700s and 1800s, the southern sea otter slowly reoccupied the core of its range in central California. Range expansion beyond central California is seen as key to full recovery of otters, but the rate of expansion has been sporadic, raising concerns about habitat quality in southern California. To describe the range expansion of sea otte...
